the Schooner North Wind

Members of Independence Seaport Museum are invited to enjoy a late summer or early fall sail on the Delaware River aboard the 75-foot North Wind, a U.S. Coast Guard-certified vessel. The North Wind will depart from the Penn's Landing basin behind the Museum. Members may bring three guests. Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be made at least 48 hours in advance.

Be the first to see the stunning true story of the fateful voyage of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur yachtsman, failed businessman and father of four, who entered the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, in 1968. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Deep Water, rated PG, is an unforgettable journey into one man’s heart of darkness. Enjoy stadium seating in the Museum’s Concert Hall, with its new movie screen, sound system, and projection equipment. Deep Water, presented by IFC Films, opens at the Ritz Theaters the following day.

Independence Seaport Museum is participating in Smithsonian Museum Day, a nationwide event where participating museums and cultural institutions across the country offer free admission to Smithsonian readers and Smithsonian.com visitors, allowing for one day only, the free-admission policy of Smithsonian's Washington, D.C.-based facilities to be emulated across the country.

Girl Scouts -- Earn a Folk Art Badge

Girl Scouts are invited to learn about the folk arts of the sea -- discover how sailors made crafts to entertain themselves out on the briny, listen to sea shanties and ancient sea yarns, look for the stories revealed in old maritime photographs, and make a sailor craft to take home.

An exhibit of nautical photographs that magnificently captures the enigmatic fusion of man, boat, and the sea. Independence Seaport Museum is the first venue to host this exhibit outside of Mystic Seaport, where the Rosenfeld collection, the world's largest collection of maritime photography, is housed. The Art of the Boat includes 40 luminous images of vintage yachting, powerboat, racing, and leisure boating.

Behind-the-Scenes Tours of
USS Olympia & USS Becuna
First Saturday of every month, 12-4 pm
Explore areas of the USS Olympia, Admiral Dewey's Spanish-American War flagship, and the World War II sub USS Becuna, that are normally off-limits to the public. See the Olympia's triple expansion steam engines, boiler room, and working ash hoist, and the Becuna's conning tower.
FREE with Membership or general admission.
Must be 12 or older and able to climb steep stairs. Comfortable walking shoes recommended. Independence Seaport Museum reserves the right to close ships during severe weather. The ships are not handicapped accessible.
Submarine Slumber!

An incredible overnight submarine adventure thta includes a scavenger hunt, activity stations, and a live performance -- all focused on those silent undersea ships. Enjoy a snack and sleep in our galleries next to a boat, under the Ben Franklin Bridge, or in the shadow of our 430-gallon saltwater aquarium. Wake up the next morning and tour our real sub -- the USS Becuna, along with the Spanish-Ameircan warship, USS Olympia.

Learn to Build Your Own Boat

This hands-on class takes the new builder through all phases of boat building -- getting the most out of a set of plans, building the backbone, steaming frames, planking, spar making, interior joinery, and more.
