BULL and BEAR represent the return of one of America’s earliest racing classes, the sandbagger.
Modeled after the 1869 sandbagger, SUSIE S, these boats offer a glimpse into one of the most extreme racers of any age. The originals were built when betting on the outcome of a race was the norm and a boat's sail area was completely unrestricted.
Enormous spreads of canvas were counterbalanced by the weight of the crew and sandbags on the weather rail. Since their launch in 1996 and 1997, BULL and BEAR have raced in Philadelphia, New York, Maine and New Jersey’s Barnegat Bay.
